This along with a good scrub and wipe down with rubbing alcohol is a good way to kick off the growing season. Specifically at this time of year during fruit tree pruning, cleaning your tools this way is a precautionary measure to limit and control the spread of disease and pathogens common to fruit bearing trees. Maintaining a regularly pruned tree or shrub will help to direct energy towards growing larger, healthier fruit. Not sure how to prune? Give us a call for pruning services or one-on-one coaching. ” list_item_2=”Consider compost: Prepare your garden. These mild winters are such a treat! Without disturbing the intricate network of soil microbes by excessive tilling, the timing is right to dig in organic compost (or well rotted, cured manure). This will provide natural aeration and add nutrients to soil that has been heavily leached throughout our West Coast rainfalls. You can find high quality compost at your local nursery, landscape supply store, or better yet, learn to make your own! Stay tuned for information and workshops on different composting systems what will teach you how to generate your own nutrient dense, locally produced black gold!” list_item_3=”Seed starting: There is lots of wiggle room here for those who are keen to get their hands dirty early. Spring crops can still be vulnerable to frost and heavy rains, so giving your sprouts some time to thrive inside before introducing them to the great outdoors is a wise move. Gather your supplies: pick up some seedling starter blend from your local nursery. It contains a delicate balance of ingredients designed for water retention, drainage, aeration, nutrient absorption, and pH balance; start saving containers to sprout your veggies in (egg containers are great since they decompose when you pop them into the soil, and are generally not chemically dyed). We start this process in early March, leaving containers in a sunny indoor spot and misting them with a spray bottle to get veggies ready for planting and hardening off in April. Our favorites to start indoors are broccoli, cauliflower, leek, cilantro, onion and tomato.” list_item_4=”Pick Seeds! Choosing your dream seeds is like a gardener’s all you can eat buffet. It can be overwhelming at first, but you will always end up with something delicious to suit your appetite. We really like sourcing our seeds from companies such as West Coast seeds (which began in the 1980’s in Vancouver) and Salt Spring Seeds that provide non-GMO, organic stock appropriate for our climate. And then there is seed saving! SOLscapes is passionate about conservation and education. Due for a revival, seed saving is a way of preserving locally adapted crops so that we can enjoy the feast year after year. Want to know more? We hope to offer several information sessions on seed literacy that will equip you with the necessary know how.” list_item_5=”This is text for item5″ list_item_6=”This is text for item6″ list_item_7=”This is text for item7″ list_item_8=”This is text for item8″ list_item_9=”This is text for item9″ list_item_10=”This is text for item10″ md_list_animation_speed=”200″ md_list_animation_delay=”0.0″ md_list_animation_position=”center” md_list_animation_show=”once” md_list_animation_easing=”Quart.easeInOut”][/md_list][md_text customize_messenger_channel=”preview-0″ customize_changeset_uuid=”484d1130-b3b9-4a56-9d76-a2ac2edbd97e” md_text_alignment=”center” md_text_title_line_height=”40″ md_text_desc_line_height=”21″ md_text_title_bottom_space=”10″ md_text_separator_bottom_space=”10″ md_text_description_bottom_space=”25″ md_text_title_separator=”no” md_text_separator_width=”110″ md_text_separator_height=”5″ md_text_separator_color=”rgb(0, 255, 153)” md_text_use_desc_custom_font=”yes” md_text_desc_google_fonts=”font_family:Roboto%3Aregular%2C100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Citalic%2C500%2C500italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” md_text_style=”solid” md_text_solid_color=”rgba(20,20,20,1)” md_text_gradient_color=”pixflow_base64eyJjb2xvcjEiOiIjODcwMmZmIiwiY29sb3IyIjoiIzA2ZmY2ZSIsImNvbG9yMVBvcyI6IjAuMDAiLCJjb2xvcjJQb3MiOiIxMDAuMDAiLCJhbmdsZSI6MH0=” md_text_title_size=”32″ md_text_letter_space=”0″ md_text_hover_letter_space=”0″ md_text_easing=”cubic-bezier(0.215, 0.61, 0.355, 1)” md_text_use_title_custom_font=”no” md_text_title_google_fonts=”font_family:Roboto%3Aregular%2C100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Citalic%2C500%2C500italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” md_text_number=”1″ md_text_title1=”pixflow_base64″ md_text_title2=”Typography Shortcode” md_text_title3=”Typography Shortcode” md_text_title4=”Typography Shortcode” md_text_title5=”Typography Shortcode” md_text_content_size=”14″ md_text_content_color=”rgba(20,20,20,1)” md_text_use_button=”no” md_text_button_style=”fade-oval” md_text_button_text=”READ MORE” md_text_button_icon_class=”icon-angle-right” md_text_button_color=”rgba(0,0,0,1)” md_text_button_text_color=”rgba(255,255,255,1)” md_text_button_bg_hover_color=”rgb(0,0,0)” md_text_button_hover_color=”rgb(255,255,255)” md_text_button_size=”standard” left_right_padding=”0″ md_text_button_url=”#” md_text_button_target=”_self” md_text_animation_speed=”200″ md_text_animation_delay=”0.0″ md_text_animation_position=”center” md_text_animation_show=”once” md_text_animation_easing=”Quart.easeInOut” md_text_fonts=”Muli:300,” md_text_fonts=” “]
